Garanza, Beige, Vandyke brownThe family is the first space in which identity takes shape, but also the first in which it risks crystallizing. It is here that roles, labels, and expectations are assigned: definitions that precede the authentic discovery of self and that, often, end up overlapping with it. Family labels become masks: reassuring, recognizable, yet at the same time limiting. They generate a fracture, a continuous dialogue between interiority and representation, between lived identity and interpreted identity. The table, then, is no longer merely the place of domestic sharing, but becomes a stage: a space where roles are enacted, repeated, and handed down. In this perspective, conflict is not necessarily something to be resolved, but to be understood. Recognizing the constructed character of these roles opens, indeed, to a possibility: to inhabit them with awareness, like an actor on stage. No longer prisoners of the image, but conscious interpreters of it.
This work arises from reflection on the theme The Illusion of the Self and from personal experiences related to family and the dynamics of belonging. I imagined the table as a stage: a place where everyone sincerely participates in the collective rite, yet at the same time interprets a role through which they are recognized by others. The work explores that subtle distance between the identity felt inwardly and the image we construct in relationships.
